HMRC is a non-ministerial department, supported by 2 agencies and public bodies. It is established by Act of Parliament in 2005 as a new department replacing the Inland Revenue and Customs and Excise. HMRC is responsible for safeguarding the flow of money to the Exchequer through its collection, compliance and enforcement activities. It administers Statutory Payments such as statutory sick pay and statutory maternity pay. HMRC also administers Child Benefit and the Government Banking Service.
